The Starting Line of Outreach

I’m sitting here in bed tonight… and my mind is racing!  I coach over at Glenelg High School and I come in contact with so many high school students everyday… and most of them do not have a clue about the abundant life that Christ offers them.  On my wrestling team (my current coaching position) there are alot of guys who clearly do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ.  And I sit here in my bed tonight, with an aching in my stomach for them to know the truth… for their lives to be dramatically changed by my Savior!  But I often find myself asking… where does it start?  Tonight I was reading a book by Jonathan McKee called “Do they run when they see you coming?  Reaching out to unchurched teenagers,” and he gives a one word place to start… LOVE.  That didn’t sound too earth-shattering to me at first… I’ve often said this myself… “We just have to love on ‘em,” and yet… I find myself struggling to love the unchurched.  Not like Jesus did anyway… he ached for them!  Tonight… I’m aching!  I don’t care about being a coach that wins championships, but one that leads students to a fulfilling life in Christ.  What if we all loved this way?  What if we quit worrying so much about ourselves and what we do inside our four walls and started worrying… no… aching for those outside our walls?  Wouldn’t we see dramatic change?  But alas… even the church (and maybe especially the church) is consumed by self… the very thing Christ said we had to deny in order to be a true follower of Him!  Tonight… I’m burning to reach the unchurched!  I want to see kids smoking in our parking lot!  Not because I’m all for teens smoking… but because those are the kids I want to reach.  I want to see teens in our church that look like the tripped and fell into a tackle box!  I want kids who find love no where else… to find it here.  That is why we named our ministry 748 Ministries to begin with.  It comes from Luke 7:48, where Jesus says to an unlovable and condemned (by religious people) woman, “your sins are forgiven!”  I pray that such a desire will not be mine alone.  I’m not sure if anyone even reads this blog… but I plead with you to LOVE with me… let’s love our community… let’s love the unloveables and let God do the rest!

And a resounding AMEN to that aching, my brother! My heart has been bent for years towards those that society marginalizes, that the church marginalizes. So many, so broken, so hopeless, so UNloved. Let’s be that revolution of love that sweeps through their “stories” and points them to “God’s story” - the only one worth living!
